With work on Yuma’s busiest intersection coming possibly as soon as next week, the City of Yuma invites residents to a public information meeting on Thursday.

The meeting will be held 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28in Council Chambers of Yuma City Hall, One City Plaza.

It is an informational meeting only. City staff members will provide a brief description of the project. Attendees will then be afforded the opportunity to approach staff members individually with questions. 

Long understood to be Yuma’s busiest intersection, the 16th Street and 4th Avenue improvements project will add dedicated right-turn lanes and dual left-turn lanes in all corners of the intersection. Bike lanes, as identified within the transportation element of the voter-approved General Plan, will be constructed.

Business access will be maintained through the course of the project. Yumans who frequent the area will be encouraged to continue to do so; the City asks motorists to please plan ahead to stay on schedule.

The City’s water transmission system will see some upgrades as part of this project as well. Existing waterlines of various sizes will be replaced with one single 16-inch water main. A section of 10-inch waterline on 4th Avenue between 16th Street and 17th Street will be replaced with a 12-inch waterline. 

The project could start as soon as May 2. Once under way, the contract calls for 300 calendar days, taking the project into the spring of 2017.

Yuma Police Want To Make Movies

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — The Yuma Police Department is seeking a federal grant to pay for body cameras for its patrol officers.

The Yuma Sun reports (http://bit.ly/1qUNpQu ) that the city is applying for a U.S. Justice Department grant to buy the cameras and pay for related costs.

Yuma Police Chief John Lekan told city officials last week he's about a year behind where he'd like to be in obtaining them for at least the 56 patrol officers who regularly interact with the public.

The grant money, if secured, can be used to pay for cameras, software, training and storage of video files.

Capital Improvements Well Spent

Yuma, Ariz. – The City of Yuma’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for Fiscal Years 2017-2021 is now available online; residents are invited to review it and provide feedback to the City.

The purpose of the CIP is to identify and address infrastructure needs while adopting the goals and policies set forth by City Council and the City of Yuma’s General Plan.

The CIP is the City's financial plan for the improvement and/or construction of municipal infrastructure. Infrastructure includes the systems and facilities needed to provide services to residents such as sidewalks, streets, parks, fire stations, police facilities, and water and sewer systems. 

Capital projects represent a significant investment in the construction of new infrastructure and the improvement or expansion of current infrastructure.
